With a Little Help From My Friends

McCartney is believed to have written most of this song, although Lennon is generally thought to have contributed to both music and lyrics. The basic track was recorded on March 29, 1967 at Abbey Road, with overdubs added on March 30, 1967. On Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Heart's Club Band, the title track segues into "With a Little Help From My Friends." Lennon stated that this was the only place where he saw the "concept" of the album and a relationship between any two of its songs. The working title for the song was "Badfinger Boogie." Starr admits that McCartney had to coax him into trying to hit the last (and very high) note of the song. Richie Havens covered the song in 1968.

Starr sings lead, with Lennon and McCartney providing backing vocals. Starr plays drums, McCartney plays bass and piano, Harrison plays tambourine, and it is presumed that Harrison plays the spare guitar lead, although some credit this to McCartney.
